Compare Grain Mills Side by Side
Grain mills vary more than most shoppers expect. A 150-watt mill designed for small batches of rice flour handles a very different workload than a 1,200-watt unit built to grind hard wheat berries into bread flour by the pound. Wattage and hopper capacity are the two numbers that matter most, and they rarely appear side by side on retailer pages.
This comparison table pulls the manufacturer specs for each grain mill, including wattage, hopper capacity, housing material, shipping weight and available colors, and lines them up in one place. Nothing is estimated or averaged. If a spec appears here, it comes directly from what the brand publishes.
Use the table to filter out mills that are underpowered for your grains, too heavy for your counter, or not available in the finish you want. Questions about what those specs mean in practice are answered in the FAQ below.

Frequently asked questions
How much wattage do I need in a grain mill?
Softer grains like oats, rice and dried corn grind well at 150 to 400 watts. Hard grains such as whole wheat berries, spelt and dried chickpeas put more strain on the motor, and most manufacturers recommend at least 600 watts for regular use with those. If you plan to mill hard grains several times a week, look for 900 watts or higher to avoid motor fatigue over time.
What does hopper capacity mean and why does it matter?
The hopper is the reservoir that holds grain before it enters the grinding mechanism. Capacity is usually listed in cups or ounces. A larger hopper means fewer refills per batch, which matters if you regularly mill enough flour for multiple loaves of bread at once. Smaller hoppers are fine for single-recipe quantities and often come on more compact, lighter machines.
Does housing material affect performance?
The housing material mainly affects durability and cleanup rather than grinding output. Stainless steel and die-cast aluminum housings resist cracking and are easier to wipe down. Plastic housings are lighter and less expensive but may absorb odors from strong grains like fenugreek or flaxseed over time. The grinding burrs or stones inside the mill matter far more for flour quality than the exterior material does.
Is a heavier grain mill always more powerful?
Not always, but there is a loose correlation. Heavier mills often have larger motors, sturdier burr assemblies and thicker housings, all of which add weight. A very light grain mill, say under 5 pounds, is unlikely to house a high-wattage motor. That said, weight alone is not a reliable proxy for power, so always check the wattage spec directly in the comparison table.
